Learning the HR Ropes
Business major gains hands-on experience at Blistex
As a manager for a park district after-school program, Alexandra Millan ’19 decided that she would do well working in human resources. “I liked the one-on-one interaction with the adults,” said the business major from Bensenville.
This past summer, Millan tried out her career choice as an intern in the human resources department at Blistex Inc., a maker of lip balms based in Oak Brook, Ill.
Millan handled a range of tasks, from compiling the results of an employee satisfaction survey to inputting data on employee salaries and benefits. During the 12-week internship, she learned more about the recruitment process and how compensation is calculated, while also assisting with the company picnic and the Blistex newsletter for employees.
“I’m learning something every day,” Millan said. “The hands-on experience is great.”
Millan transferred to Elmhurst College as an education major, but quickly switched to business with a focus on human resources. When Holly Coffin, assistant director for internships at the Russell G. Weigand Center for Professional Excellence, recommended the Blistex opportunity, Millan sprung into action. She completed her cover letter and resume in December and prepared for two interviews. She was offered the position in mid-April.
Through the internship and her senior year coursework, Millan looks forward to digging deeper into issues such as negotiation, cultural diversity, productivity and retention. “Learning how to hire the right people and train them well is a life lesson,” she said.
