Hands-On, Future-Ready

Alyssa Yezzi ’27 isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty, immersing herself in every new project she takes on.

She completely renovated her home’s bathroom on her own, from tearing out the old fixtures to laying new tile and installing a brand-new sink. She attributes her passion for practical work to her grandfather, whose guidance helped her realize that a hands-on career was the right path for her.

From Home Renovations to the Health Sciences

“I’m really close to my grandpa; he taught me how to renovate and build things,” Yezzi said. “He showed me what I really like, which is being hands-on, and that’s why I enjoy the labs here. I’m not just sitting in a classroom for hours; I’m actually doing something.”

Yezzi is a Honors Program student majoring in health science technology, with plans to specialize in either nuclear medicine technology or diagnostic medical sonography during her junior year.

As a result, Yezzi spends a lot of time behind the microscope.

She noted that participating in labs helps her better understand the content of the class and connect the dots between the textbook and the real world. Elmhurst supports this kind of experiential learning, which allows students to gain knowledge and skills that are vital in their future fields and ensures that they are well prepared for what’s next.

“I’ve really liked all my classes so far and try to take advantage of the resources that Elmhurst offers, like free tutoring, or connecting with professors during office hours,” Yezzi said.

A Clear-Cut Choice

Elmhurst was always one of Yezzi’s top choices when considering where to attend college, particularly because of the strong reputation of the School of Health Sciences and the wide variety of programs housed under its umbrella. A combination of the scholarships she earned from her high school and the University, and various other forms of financial aid allowed her to finance her education.

“I applied to 10 schools and got accepted to all of them, but at the end of the day I chose Elmhurst because of the opportunities they provide,” Yezzi said. “The affiliated program will help me get experience during my senior year as I work in the hospital that Elmhurst partners with, which will also help me get a job after I graduate, as they have a 100 percent placement rate.”

Both the nuclear medicine technology or diagnostic medical sonography affiliated programs partner with Northwestern Memorial Hospital, so students can get real-world experience prior to graduating and are better prepared for their future careers in health care. This is one of several academic affiliations available at Elmhurst, which give graduates a professional edge through relevant practice.

Connecting Communities and Prioritizing Family

As both a Latina and a first-generation college student, Yezzi is a part of multiple communities that make up Elmhurst’s diverse study body. The University is a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), which provides Hispanic, Latinx and underrepresented Elmhurst students with resources and support to foster a successful experience. Elmhurst’s commitment to diversity ensures all students are given the confidence to build and advance their futures.

An HSI grant helped to fund El Centro de la Promesa Azul (The Center of the Blue Promise), a gathering and resource space on campus dedicated to Latinx/Hispanic students. Yezzi frequents the center to study and connect with her peers.

“Everyone is welcome and all the people who work there are super nice,” Yezzi said. “It’s an environment where I feel like I fit in and have been able to make connections with people and meet new friends. It really feels like a family there.”

Family is a central value for Yezzi. The easy commute to campus from her home in Chicago and the flexibility to live with her family while still having a traditional college experience was key to her decision to choose Elmhurst.

“I get a taste of home and a taste of school at the same time,” Yezzi said. “I know I have someone to talk to, whether that’s at school or at home.” The close-knit, supportive environment surrounding Yezzi on campus and at home will help her succeed now and into the future.

Compassionate at the Core

Compassion for others is top of mind for Yezzi as she pursues a career in radiology, hoping to make patients feel comfortable while also giving back to her family. Yezzi feels that same compassion surrounding her in the caring community she has found at Elmhurst, which cultivates inclusivity and allows students to excel in their careers and collaborations through supportive experiences.

“I feel like a part of the school, because it’s so much more than just going to classes,” Yezzi said. “I’ll go to campus events with my friends or even invite my family members if it’s open to them. I love it here, and I have no regrets.”
