Programs of Study

What is the nature of the mind? Do we have free will? Is the world as it appears?

Philosophers refuse to accept easy answers to these questions. Instead, they develop techniques of reasoning to construct and evaluate different possible approaches.

Philosophy at Elmhurst examines the history of attempts to formulate and answer the great questions. But philosophy also helps students develop a strong reasoning acuity, which can be employed to solve any sort of difficult problem. Whether you plan to major or minor in philosophy or just take a few courses, philosophy can help you build a more intelligent, more carefully examined life.

The Department of Philosophy offers courses that satisfy many of the Elmhurst University Integrated Curriculum requirements, including the historical analysis, fine arts, inquiry into ethics and justice, social and political analysis, and religious studies in context areas of knowledge, and the quantitative reasoning and social responsibility tags.
