Virginia Dixon serves as one of two bass teacher trainers for the Suzuki Association of the Americas and is the only bass trainer for the European Suzuki Association. She trains bass professors, orchestra bassists, active performers, and conservatory students from 21 countries, and her work has taken her to eight countries on four continents and has brought courses to the Elmhurst campus.

Dixon holds two performance degrees from Indiana University and has done doctoral work in performance at Stony Brook University, where her major teachers were Julius Levine, Murray Grodner and Georg Hortnagel. She has performed widely throughout the U.S., Europe, South America and Japan.

Some of her favorite performances have been as a member of the Louisville Orchestra, with Sam Baron and the Bach Aria Group, and with the St. John Passion in Munich, Brussels and Paris.

Dixon has served on the board of directors of the International Society of Bassists where she also has been director of the Young Bassist’s Program. In 2005 she received the society’s Special Achievement Award. As a member of the Suzuki Bass Committee, she has published five volumes on the Suzuki Bass Method. Her work has been published in the journals of the American Suzuki Association, the International Society of Bassists, the Illinois String Teachers Association, and in The Instrumentalist. In addition to her writing on pedagogy, she also composes and arranges. She has recorded for Louisville, Albany and Cedille Records, and has performed live on WFMT, Chicago.
