David Stovall, Ph.D., is a faculty member in the Department of Criminology, Law and Justice at the University of Illinois Chicago. His scholarship investigates critical race theory, the relationship between housing and education, and the intersection of race, place and school.
On Feb. 15, Stovall will present “Now is the Time for Critical Race Theory: Chaos, Community and Radical Propositions for Education,” this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Intercultural Lecture at Elmhurst University.
Bringing theory to action, Stovall works with community organizations and schools to address issues of equity, justice and abolishing the school-prison nexus. His work led him to become a member of the design team for the Greater Lawndale/Little Village School for Social Justice (SOJO), which opened in 2005. In addition to his academic work at UIC, Stovall served as a volunteer social studies teacher at the Greater Lawndale/Little Village School for Social Justice from its opening until 2018.
Furthering his work with communities, students and teachers, Stovall also has been involved with the Peoples Education Movement, a collection of classroom teachers, community members, students and university professors in Chicago, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area who engage in collaborative community projects centered in creating relevant curriculum.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Intercultural Lecture will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15, in the Frick Center, Founders Lounge. Admission is free. For questions, email [email protected].
