CASTING INFORMATION
INCLUSION STATEMENT:
Elmhurst University Theatre is committed to inclusion for all students within our community, and in keeping with the mission of the University invites students of all ethnicities, genders and gender expressions, and students with disabilities, to audition, work, and participate in our programs.
We recognize that much of theatre literature has written characters in a binary manner, using he/him and she/her pronouns; we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to audition for roles they most identify with.
A list of character descriptions is below. Know that the collaborative creative team seeks to cast expansively with intention and consideration of race/ethnicity, gender and gender expression, body type, and ability.
(Inclusion statement developed with language borrowed from and adapted by Kavin Kantor and Emily Tarquin.)
Please note that the rehearsal schedule will be very tight. Rehearsal schedule and expectations for attendance will be provided at the auditions.
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS:
- PERCY TALBOTT: Early 20s. A bit rough-edged, her face declares the strength of her youth and a sadness beyond her years. Her accent has a southern Appalachian cadence. Strong folk / Country belt to ‘D,’ some head voice required.
- HANNAH FEEGUSON: About 70. A tough-skinned and flinty old bird with a short, no-nonsense manner bordering on the bitter. Mezzo/alto chest range.
- SHELVY THORPE: Mid-30s. A soft-faced creature with a shy, almost ethereal manner. Shimmering folk soprano with strong high belt to ‘D.’
- CALEB THORPE: Early 40s. Out-of-work foreman of the stone quarry. Frustrated working man clinging to the past. Solid folk/rock voice with an edge (Top ‘G’).
- JOE SUTTER: Mid-late 20s. A young small-town policeman with an appealing intensity and restless nature. Strong folk tenor to a ‘G’ (touches an ‘A’).
- EFFY KRAYNECK: 50s. Postmistress and busybody, a woman with narrow eyes and a spur tongue. Solid singer in mezzo/alto chest range. (Carries close harmonies.)
- THE VISITOR: Mid-40s. A mysterious figure who never speaks. An actor with powerful eyes and a very strong sense of his body.
