The master’s program in nursing continued its steady climb up the ranks of the annual U.S. News list of best graduate schools for nursing in the United States. In the new rankings, released on March 29, Elmhurst’s program appears at No. 135—more than 10 points higher than last year.

Elmhurst is one of only five Illinois schools to appear among the nation’s top 135, following closely behind much larger, research-based institutions including the University of Illinois at Chicago and Rush University.

Next year, with the launch of Elmhurst’s online Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program, the University will be eligible for the U.S. News rankings for doctoral programs as well as those at the master’s level.

“We are excited to again be recognized at the national and state levels for our excellence in master’s level nursing education,” said Diane Salvador, executive director of Elmhurst’s department of nursing and health sciences. “Receiving this distinction over time is an indication of consistent excellence in teaching, and preparation of students for advanced nursing roles. We look forward to recognition next year of our new DNP program as well.”

Elmhurst’s graduate program in nursing, which leads to a master of science in nursing (MSN), combines the convenience of part-time classes with the close-knit support of a cohort program. Choosing from three professional tracks—nurse administrator, clinical nurse leader and nurse educator—students engage in weekly clinical practice and get valuable hands-on experience.

To compile the Best Nursing Schools rankings, U.S. News evaluates programs on their research activity, faculty resources, student excellence and qualitative ratings from experts. Program quality, which counts for 40 percent of the total ranking, incorporates assessments from other nursing school leaders and from health care professionals.
