This roundtable discussion with Dr. Erika McCombs, Dr. Karen Benjamin and Dr. Emily Navarro will explore the historical conflict/tension between the women’s rights movement and the larger struggle for racial equality.
Erika McCombs
Dr. McCombs is a lecturer in the English department where she teaches courses in composition, Civil War Literature, and service learning. Dr. McCombs’ current research project examines the performative nature of abolitionist work of the 19th-century as a way of contextualizing the current protests against police brutality. As part of her teaching, she utilizes community-engaged curriculum as anti-racist pedagogy in the composition classroom.Emily Navarro
Dr. Emily Navarro is a professor in the Sociology and Criminal Justice Department. She teaches a wide range of classes dealing with issues of inequality, including gender, race, and globalization. Her research focuses on the experience of unaccompanied migrant youth, particularly as they navigate life in the United States.Karen Benjamin
Karen Benjamin is an assistant professor in the History Department at Elmhurst University. Her research and teaching interests include twentieth-century U.S. history, U.S. race relations, urban and suburban history, and the history of the U.S. South.
