Sarah Fredericks studies how guilt and shame affect the way we think and behave in response to environmental sustainability issues.
On March 13, she will present Gender-Based Environmental Shame: A Problem for Everyone when she gives this year’s Genevieve Staudt Intercultural Lecture at Elmhurst College as part of Women’s History Month.
Fredericks is an assistant professor of environmental ethics and an affiliated faculty member of the Program on the Global Environment and the Center for the Study of Gender and Sexuality at the University of Chicago. Her research focuses on sustainability, sustainable energy, environmental guilt and shame, and environmental justice.
She is the author of Measuring and Evaluating Sustainability: Ethics in Sustainability Indexes (Routledge, 2013), and is currently working on a book about the ethical dimensions of experiencing and inducing environmental guilt and shame, particularly about climate change.
The Genevieve Staudt Intercultural Lecture will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, in the Founders Lounge of the Frick Center. Admission is $10 for the general public and free for Elmhurst College students, faculty, staff and alumni.
