COURSE OBJECTIVE: To introduce the Mathematics majors to the more theoretical aspects of Probability and (in MTH 498) Statistics.

Text:              John M. Freund’s Mathematical Statistics with Applications, 7th ed., by Miller & Miller

Material to be covered:

   Chapters 1 - 8, as time permits.

Grading:

There will be three 100 point tests.

Homework — 100 points

Projects/Presentations — 50 points

Final Examination -- 200 points

 TOTAL -- 650 points

The Homework grade is based on a percentage of the total possible Homework points. The SEMESTER GRADE is based on a percentage of the total available points: 90% and above is an "A", below 90% and 80% or above is a "B", below 80% and 70% or above is a "C", below 70% and 60% or above is a "D", and below 60% is an "F".

QUIZ POLICY: There will be no "pop" quizzes given for grades.

PROJECT/PRESENTATION POLICY: A list of the articles/projects will be available in the next couple of weeks. The project/presentation is a summary/reaction paper and presentation. In addition, you will be required to attend one mathematics seminar, held mostly on Wednesdays from 4 to 5 in DA 213. A short one page summary/reaction paper to the seminar will be required.

HOMEWORK POLICY: There is a one class-day grace period for late homework to receive full credit. You may work with others on the homework problems.

REPLACEMENT TEST POLICY: If you take all of the 100 point tests on the announced dates, the final examination may be used to replace at most one grade from a test. There will be NO MAKE-UP TESTS ALLOWED. If you miss a test, the score (based on 100 points) for the final examination will serve as your score for the missed test(s), and only the missed one(s) will be replaced.

Final Examination: Tuesday, December 15, 2009, 1:00 p.m to 3:00 p.m.

Academic Integrity Policy:

You will adhere to the College Academic Integrity Policy as stated in the E-Book as it applies to this class. In particular:

You may work with others on your homework. (Homework that is graded need not be all of your own work).

Tests and quizzes are to be your own work (no help from others or other sources unless specifically stated otherwise -- e.g. "group" work section).

For projects and other group work, the group is to be treated as an individual on a quiz or test.

On quizzes, tests, and projects you may always ask questions of me.
