Course Description: An introduction to linear algebra, vectors, vector spaces, linear transformations and eigenvalues and vectors. Prerequistes: Math 251 and 301 (or equivalent).
Text: Introduction to Linear Algebra, 5th Edition, by Johnson, Riess, & Arnold
GRADES:
There will be quizzes & projects, three tests, and a Final Examination. The Final will be comprehensive and cover material in Chapters 1-6. The Final Examination will be on Friday, December 12, 2008 from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. The Homework & Quiz grade will be scaled to a total of 100 points.
.
Three Tests (100 points each) 300 points
Homework, & Quiz grade 100 points
Career Night and Article Paper 50 points
Final Examination 200 points
─────
650 points
The GRADE in the course is based on a percentage of the total available points: 90% and above is an "A", below 90% and 80% or above is a "B", below 80% and 70% or above is a "C", below 70% and 60% or above is a "D", and below 60% is an "F".
QUIZ POLICY: All quizzes for grades will be announced. Any missed quiz grade will be replaced by the appropriately scaled grade of the test immediately following the missed quiz.
HOMEWORK POLICY: There is a one class-day grace period for late homework to receive full credit. You may work with others on the homework problems.
REPLACEMENT TEST POLICY: If you take all of the 100 point tests on the announced dates, the final examination may be used to replace at most one grade from a test. There will be NO MAKE-UP TESTS ALLOWED. If you miss a test, the score (based on 100 points) for the final examination will serve as your score for the missed test(s), and only the missed one(s) will be replaced.
CAREER NIGHT: As part of your grade, you are required to attend Career Night (November 12th or 19th. The time will be 7 pm and the location tba) and hand in a one-page reaction/summary paper.
ARTICLE/PROJECT: The project will require reading an article about a topic from Linear Algebra and writing a reaction/summary paper. If time permits there may be additional homework/project related to the article and/or class presentations. More details will be provided later.
Academic Integrity Policy:
Students are expected to be familiar with the Code of Academic Integrity in the Elmhurst College E-book and with the statement posted at http://www.elmhurst.edu/~mth/acadint.html . In particular:
● You may work with others on your homework. (Homework that is graded need not be all of your own work).
● Tests are to be your own work (no help from others or other sources unless specifically stated otherwise -- e.g. "group" work section, "open book" and "open notes ").
● For projects and other group work, the group is to be treated as an individual on a test.
● On tests and projects you may always ask questions of me.
