COURSE OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the course I hope that you will be able to:

            1) Calculate different statistics from data.

            2) Perform tests of hypotheses on data or statistics.

            3) Interpret statistics and statistical tests.

            4) Perform probability calculations.

            5) Understand probability distributions.

            6) Use resources to assist you in working with data.

            7) Critically examine statistical claims.

Many of the objectives in the course are based on computing and calculating, so much of the homework is of a "drill" nature to increase your computational skills. Fortunately, a good calculator (TI 84 or 83-Plus) will minimize the computational pain. You should purchase or have a calculator which is capable of easily performing statistical calculations (look for mean, standard deviation, variance, ... in the owner's manual). Bring the calculator each day! Bring the owner's manual the second day of class!!

TEXT: Elementary Statistics, 10th Edition by Triola

The material to be covered is selected material from Chapters 1 - 12.

SEMESTER GRADE:

Three tests*                                        300

Homework and Quizzes:  100 points

Final Examination       200 points

                                                             600 points

* The last test may be given in two parts

The Homework and Quiz grade is based on a percentage of the total possible Homework and Quiz points. The SEMESTER GRADE is based on a percentage of the total available points: 90% and above is an "A", below 90% and 80% or above is a "B", below 80% and 70% or above is a "C", below 70% and 60% or above is a "D", and below 60% is an "F". The last test may include "out of class" portions.

QUIZ POLICY: There will be no "pop" quizzes given for grades.

HOMEWORK POLICY: There is a one class-day grace period for late homework to receive full credit. You may work with others on the homework problems.

REPLACEMENT TEST POLICY: If you take all of the 100 point tests on the announced dates, the final examination may be used to replace at most one grade from a test. There will be NO MAKE-UP TESTS ALLOWED. If you miss a test, the score (based on 100 points) from the final examination will serve as your score for the missed test(s), and only the missed one(s) will be replaced.

Final Examination: Thursday, May 22, 2008 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

Academic Integrity Policy:

Students are expected to be familiar with the Code of Academic Integrity in the Elmhurst College E-book and with the statement posted at http://www.elmhurst.edu/~mth/acadint.html . In particular:

You may work with others on your homework. (Homework that is graded need not be all of your own work).

Tests are to be your own work (no help from others or other sources unless specifically stated otherwise -- e.g. "group" work section, "open book" and "open notes ").

For projects and other group work, the group is to be treated as an individual on a test.

On tests and projects you may always ask questions of me.

Notes:

1. The College will make reasonable accommodations for persons with documented disabilities. If you have a disability that may have some impact on your work in this course, please contact the Disabilities Service Provider at 630-617-3753.

2. The number to call to find out whether the College has canceled all classes is: 630-617-3777.

3. A link to the Illinois Secondary Education Mathematics Content-Area Standards for this course can be found at: http://www.elmhurst.edu/~mth .

4. Departmentally sponsored tutors will be available in the Learning Center during the week. A schedule of the tutoring hours should be available within the first two weeks of class. Students can also set up times to get special help from the Mathematics Specialist (Emmi McAdams), by calling her at 617-5376 for an appointment.
