COURSE
OBJECTIVES:
By the end of
the course, you should:
∙
have a strong conceptual understanding of derivatives and integrals in
several variables
∙
have an understanding of additional coordinate systems and integration
and differentiation in those systems
∙
have an understanding of vector calculus and some of its applications
∙
be able to use computer resources (MAPLE, DERIVE or the TI-89/92) to
assist you in the solution and analysis of mathematical problems that
involve calculus of several variables.
Text:
Multivariable Calculus, Fifth Edition, by Stewart (or Calculus, Fifth
Edition, by Stewart )
Material to be
covered: Chapters 13 - 17.
GRADING:
The grading will be based on tests, homework, project/papers and the
final examination.
Tests: Three -
about every 3 to 5 weeks 300
points (100 points each)
Homework
100 points
Paper/Projects
50 points
Final
Examination (Dec. 14, 2007 @ 8 am).
200 points
The Homework
grade is based on a percentage of the total possible homework
points.
Similarly, the
SEMESTER GRADE is based on a percentage of the total available
points: 90% and above is an "A", below 90% and 80% or above is a
"B", below 80% and 70% or above is a "C", below 70% and 60% or above is
a "D", and below 60% is an "F".
HOMEWORK
POLICY: There is a one class-day grace period for late homework
to receive full credit. You are encouraged to work with others on
the homework problems.
REPLACEMENT
TEST POLICY: If you take all of the 100 point tests on the
announced dates, the final examination may be used to replace at most
one grade from a test. There will be NO MAKE-UP TESTS
ALLOWED. If you miss a test, the score (based on 100 points) for
the final examination will serve as your score for the missed test(s),
and only the missed ones will be replaced.
Paper/Project:
Short papers or projects may be due at various times throughout the
term. These will often be group projects and involve the use of the
computer or TI-89/92. As part of the grade in this area, you are
required to attend one mathematics seminar (4:00 - 5:00 on Wednesdays)
during the term and hand in a one-page reaction/summary.
Final
Examination: Friday, December 14, 2007 from 8:00 to 10:00 A.M.
Academic
Integrity Policy:
Students are
expected to be familiar with the Code of Academic Integrity in the
Elmhurst College E-book and with the statement posted at
http://www.elmhurst.edu/~mth/acadint.html . In particular:
●
You may work with others on your homework. (Homework that is graded
need not be all of your own work).
●
Tests are to be your own work (no help from others or other sources
unless specifically stated otherwise -- e.g. "group" work
section, "open book" and "open notes ").
●
For projects and other group work, the group is to be treated as an
individual on a test.
●
On tests and projects you may always ask questions of me.
