Week # 3 September 16 -23

I am really happy to see that nearly everyone has made a good start in completing assignments on time, although too many of you are waiting until the last day. The Topic 2 lecture discussion went well with some good contributions. You did a nice job on the element reports.

Third Week Assignments due on September 23

Topic 2 lecture discussion
Laboratory # 1

NOTE on Late Assignments: Starting this week, the grace period is over and I will begin to deduct points for work completed after the due date. The due dates given for Wednesdays may be liberally interpreted as on the discussion board by 9:00 AM on the Thursday morning. I do appreciate early returns on assignments as I can then space out my response times. If there is an Elmhurst computer malfunction this does not apply. If you need an extension (without late point deduction) due to out of town business or illness, I need PRIOR notification (email or phone call). The honor system applies and many repeated requests will become suspect.

Third Week Assignments Due on September 23:

1. Lecture Topic 3: This is the final week of some purely chemistry topics: TOPIC 3: Chemical Compounds and Bonding.

Watch the heading of the page for the distribution of the questions.

I need to see more references for your information. In some case this has been sparse in the first two topics and causes a lose of a point.

The molecule report for this topic will focus on some industrial compounds most of which contain chlorine.  This will be part of the lead in for the Issue question which is:  Should we ban Chlorine containing compounds?

The content questions are focused on the properties and bonding in chemical compounds.

2. Laboratory # 2: Work on Lab 2 -Lab Menu - Several versions available - Online version HTML format and MSWord version). Once you have printed a version of the lab, then check the online version Lab #2 because I have given you the results for the first part of the lab, so all you have to do is start from the data given to do the calculations. Be sure to answer all questions and do all of the calculations. In a few places, I have given approximate answers to keep you on the right track. Hopefully this will not take as long as the first one, as it has fewer chemicals.

A LOOK AHEAD:

1. You may want to look ahead begin work on the Energy Assessment Lab. This will be due in the 5th week.  This requires you to keep track of gasoline use and find electric and natural gas bills.
How much gasoline, electricity, and natural gas do you personally use that ultimately contribute carbon dioxide, as a result of combustion reactions, to the greenhouse effect? It will be interesting to see who is the energy miser and who uses the most energy!!!

2. RAIN, RAIN: Look ahead to Lab # 4, you need to check the pH of rain and other water samples- Part I. Procedure 1 and 2 - about less than half way down on the browser page. So get out the pH papers- two types and measure the pH of some rain samples as we get some rain - this is not something you can do the night before it is due.

3.  Exam # 1, click the link for the Exam Menu with a variety of formats due September 30 is now posted, if you want an early start.
