The Testimony of the Arts
19th Annual Holocaust Education Project
April 19–23, 2009
The annual Holocaust Education Project at Elmhurst College is an international, interfaith, interdisciplinary effort to teach what cannot be taught. Since its inception in 1991, the Project has explored one of the darkest periods in human history through lectures by prominent Holocaust scholars, film discussions, teacher education projects, art exhibits, discussions with survivors and rescuers, services of remembrance, and more.
This year, the Holocaust Education Process engages the fine arts as a means of coming to terms with the Holocaust. Performances include a concert and lecture, “Tragedy and Transcendence: Giving Voice to the Arts of the Holocaust,” with University of Chicago musicologist Philip Bohlman and lecturer Christine Wilkie Bohlman, on April 21. The Project also features a performance by the Elmhurst College Concert Choir, a one-person plays depicting the lives of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Walter Rauschenbusch, workshops, films, and art exhibits. The Service of Remembrance is scheduled for Sunday, April 19.
